Can I Drive With An Oil Leak?

Lubrication is essential to your vehicle. it reduces corrosion, cools the engine and reduces wear on moving parts. If you notice a black puddle underneath your vehicle, it should not be ignored. We recommend you get it inspected as soon as possible. Below are some common signs and dangers of driving with an oil leak:

  • If left alone, an oil leak can cause seals and hoses to wear prematurely. They are also a fire risk and can cause failure without warning. If oil catches fire while driving, there is potential for injury to yourself and others.
  • If you smell burning oil, then you have a leak. If it continues to leak onto hot parts of the engine, it will give off a distinct smell. If it is coming from the front of your vehicle, it’s time to reach out to a mobile auto mechanic.
  • If you happen to be driving down the road and notice blue smoke from your tail pipe, this is another clear sign of an oil leak as well. Blue smoke is a sign of burning oil typically. Check underneath your engine as well, you may see puddles or stains that are black in color. These two signs combined can indicate an oil leak.
  • Driving with a severe oil leak is dangerous, as it is a fire hazard. If the leak is not attended to in a timely manner, the engine can wear prematurely causing complete failure. Check your oil levels, be conscious of vehicle smells and look at the color of your exhaust.
