Why shouldn’t I recharge it myself?

Engaging in do-it-yourself (DIY) projects is fantastic and can be a cost-saving measure in times of need. However, it is important to note that attempting to recharge your system on your own can carry inherent risks. Mishandling the process could lead to personal injury or harm to others, and there is also the potential of causing damage to your system. In such cases, the expenses incurred for repairs might outweigh any initial cost savings.

One of the most unfavorable outcomes that can occur is overcharging the system. When a system is overcharged, there is a risk of damaging the compressor or causing an air conditioning hose to burst. It is possible to determine if the system has been overcharged by conducting a pressure test. Typically, the low side of the system operates within the range of 35 to 45 psi (pounds per square inch), while the high side operates between 200 and 400 psi. If the pressure on the low side exceeds 45 psi, it could be an indication of overcharging or the presence of a faulty component.

Refrigerant or Freon possesses a high level of flammability, making it crucial to avoid using it in proximity to an open flame. There is a significant risk of injury associated with direct contact, as it freezes upon contact with the skin or eyes and can cause intense pain. Additionally, releasing refrigerants into the atmosphere is not only hazardous but also against the law. Violators could face severe consequences such as imprisonment or substantial fines.
